Work with a Blended Diet - Specialist Dietitian

At Wilbo’s Blends we are passionate about the blended diet and the life changing impact it can have for people with a feeding tube.

We know that tube feeding can be overwhelming, it is hard to understand and navigate all the information in order to do what is best for you or your loved one.

The blended diet for tube feeding has become increasingly popular for good reason. More research is being published all the time showing the benefits a real food blended diet can have on gastrointestinal symptoms like reflux, vomiting, constipation, gas and discomfort or diarrhoea. People often report on just feeling better having more energy, better skin and hair. Food is fundamental to our health and wider well being, tube feeding is different but real food is also far more social and inclusive.

Our dietetics appointments are designed to give you a much more personal level of support at any stage of the tube feeding journey. Whether you preparing for a new feeding tube, exploring switching from formula or trying to plan for removing the need for a feeding tube our dietitians can help guide you along the way.

  • Qualified in 2016 with a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics degree from the University of Nottingham and has worked as a registered dietitian within the NHS since this time. Hannah has been looking after the clinical nutritional needs of tube fed children for over 6 years. Within the past 12 months, Hannah has specialised further into the field of inherited metabolic diseases. Since qualifying, Hannah has gained a wealth of knowledge on the complex nutritional needs of many different conditions. Hannah is experienced in prescribing various therapeutic diets, such as dietary fortification for poor growth, allergy and intolerance specific diets and specialist low protein, fat and carbohydrate diets. In addition, Hannah has recently undertaken training specific to the therapeutic use of ketogenic diets.

Hannah’s interest in blended diets evolved during her time as a home enteral feeding dietitian, alongside Dr Sarah Durnan (RD). Hannah continues to advocate and support patients choosing blended diet. Having seen the benefits first hand within many of her patients, she is keen on changing the perception of blended diets and feels this should be offered as a first line treatment, whenever appropriate.

“I am excited about working alongside the Wilbo’s team, and keen to collaborate with likeminded professionals who share my passion for blended diets. I’m looking forward to providing help and support to blended diet community, by offering personalised advice to enable individuals to thrive on their journey to better health.”

  • Has worked with tube-fed children and young people and their families for twelve years as a dietitian at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. In clinical practice she saw firsthand the benefits blended diet can have on physical symptoms such as reflux, retching and vomiting. In 2014, Sarah undertook a three month travelling scholarship to the USA to learn how dietitians there support their patients, she was lucky to be invited to stay with several families who use blended diet giving her unique insight into the day to day practicalities.

Her doctoral research explored individual parents’ experiences of choosing a blended diet for their tube fed child. Her work found that parents perceive there to be social and emotional as well as physical benefits to blended diet and gave rich understanding of the challenges faced by families such as engaging health care teams. Subsequently, Dr Durnan was invited to co-lead the review of the British Dietetic Association’s (BDA) Position Statement (2019) and Practice Toolkit (2021) on the use of blended diet with enteral feeding tubes.

Dr Durnan is an expert on the topic and has been invited to present her work at international conferences such as European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN) and European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). Dr Durnan continues to research blended diet as Honorary Assistant Professor at the Centre for Children and Young People's Health
