Frequently asked questions

How to use Wilbo’s Blends

  • It is important to always consult your dietician before you make any changes to a tube-fed person’s diet.

Wilbo's Blends has been designed to be bolus fed using a 60 ml syringe. We have used a flexible pouch to reduce mess and improve food safety.

Additional liquid can be added if a thinner blend is needed, for example to be used with a pump. This will change the nutritional content of the meal so you will need to take account of that.

  • Wilbo's Blends is best kept at room temperature when sealed. Wilbo's Blends contain no additives so once opened it should be consumed within 2 hours, or can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

  • Wilbo's Blends is suitable for people using tube-fed and dysphagia blend diets, but really anybody can eat it if they want to - it’s just real food blended to liquidised level 3 (IDDSI).

Everybody's dietary requirements are different so it's important to make sure your diet meets those requirements, and this needs to be specific for every individual.

Once this has been considered, and if everyday food is deemed suitable, anybody can enjoy Wilbo's Blends.

  • This is something that was raised as a concern in the past when talking about the blended diet. With a feeding tube a blockage is possible but research has found it is not a common problem with properly prepared food.

We have tested Wilbo's blends extensively and have never had a blockage.

  • A J-tube or the J port of a G-J-tube needs to be treated differently to a G port and we don’t recommend the use of Wilbo’s Blends with a J tube.

It is important that you work with your dietician to understand the reasons why a J-port is needed before being used for a blended diet.

Bolus feeding is typically not safe into a J-tube.

Ingredients and nutrition

  • All of the ingredients are available on our meals page.

Dietary variation is important for gut health and we have thought carefully about this, but also tried to minimise known allergens wherever we can.

  • Wilbo's Blends is best kept at room temperature when sealed.

Wilbo's Blends contains no additives so once opened it should be consumed within 2 hours, or can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

  • Wilbo’s Blends meals are not a formula. This is because they are 100% real food, with no additives. This really is the entire point of why we have created them. So, people can experience the benefits of a real food diet.

For a meal to be called nutritionally complete means it must provide 100 percent of the recommend values of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals in every portion. For formulas to be used on their own in this way (as a sole source of nutrition), it means they need additives…making a formula.

It is unlikely any single meal you have is nutritionally complete, unless it has additives. The way we therefore get all the nutrition we need day to day is by eating a balanced and varied diet of everyday foods. The same principle applies to Wilbo’s Blends.

This means by design Wilbo’s Blends are not nutritionally complete and are not a sole source of nutrition. They are intended to be used as part of an overall balanced and varied diet of everyday foods.

  • You should consult your dietician or doctor before starting any new supplements. If taking regular medication it is also a good idea to consult your pharmacist too.

We have created Wilbo's Blends to offer the best nutritional profile using only real foods, and the intention is they are used as part of a balanced and varied blended diet. However, this still may not meet all of your individual requirements - for example it is sometimes recommended that a Vitamin D supplement is taken by your dietitian or doctor.

Although we think wherever possible nutrients should come from real food, we also know this isn't always possible. If unsure whether you need supplements based on your diet, please do check with your dietitian or doctor.
